Have you ever been to a city centre in the middle of the sea?

The city of Kristiansund is situated on four different islands. But don’t worry – in minutes, the tiny ferry Sundbåten will take you between Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet. Ask the skipper to let you off at the Milnbrygga wharf, where you can visit the Norwegian Clipfish Museum. Located in a house from 1787, it is one of the most unique eateries in town. Did you know that Kristiansund is home to the country’s oldest opera? With more than 100 performances a year, you can always catch a show. Every year in February, they arrange the popular festival Operafestukene, where you get served opera for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 17 days.

Until then it had been a settlement. In 1560 the town was a centre of the Unity of the Brethren, who ran a school here. The growth was strictly connected with the discovery and exploitation of limestone in neighbouring Bielawy in 1860.

Piazza Silvestri, Bevagna, Umbria, Italy

Piazza Silvestri is located in the small town of Bevagna, in the province of Perugia. It is considered among the most significant medieval urban constructions in Umbria. The square is overlooked by the Gothic building Palazzo dei Consoli and the Romanesque churches of San Silvestro and San Michele Arcangelo.

The town is surrounded by four walls, the so called “Gaite“. They are perfectly preserved and marked by square towers through which you access the historic centre, characterised by it's long, narrow streets and very picturesque views.

No doubt the most important event is the Market of Gaite, a medieval fair during which it is recreated the daily life in Bevagna in the period between 1250 and 1350. An amazing revival! For ten days, over the last two Sundays in June, Bevagna turns back in time. The old shops resume their activities, local people wear the costumes of that epoch and live again the daily life with games and traditional crafts.

As in the past the Gaite of Bevagna, San Giorgio, San Giovanni, San Pietro and Santa Maria compete in four challenges: the market contest, the craft contest, the culinary contest, the sports contest with archery. Through a complex system of points assigned by different experts, the winner is declared on the last day of the event and receives the Palio of victory. The atmosphere during those days is truly unique!

The entire re-enactment is accompanied by performances, concerts, children’s entertainment and local cuisine. On this occasion, the Museum will be exceptionally open even at night to discover and enjoy the artistic heritage of the village.

Bevagna is located at about 30 minutes from Perugia, the Umbrian capital city and it is well connected to the towns of Foligno and Todi. It is also near to Spoleto, Montefalco and Bettona. Therefore, without driving too much you can visit several centres of considerable interest.

Piazza Martiri della Libertà, Gualdo Tadino, Perugia, Italy

Piazza Martiri della Libertà, Gualdo Tadino, Perugia, Italy

Gualdo Tadino, famous for its ceramics industry and art, lays on Sant'Angelo hill dominated by the castel "Rocca Flea". Athough not much is known about the history of the town during ancient romans, it is quite sure that the roman Tadinum was an important center since it was along the Flaminia way.

It was destroyed and robbed several times by the barbarians; and due to that it was rebuilt in 1180 on the close hills, as testified by the name Gualdo, from the german word "walt" i.e. "wood". During the Middle Age it became a free commun, and later on it was taken over by the papal state.

The town has a number of artistic attractions: first of all the castle, named Rocca Flea , realized in the XIII century for order of Federico II. Among the other churches, there are the Dome of San Benedetto (XIII century) with its interesting facade on which a rose-window opens (at its inside wonderful works can be found) and the Church of San Francesco, a marveous gothic building, decorated by Matteo di Gualdo, which was born in this town. Interesting also is the Communal Pinacotheca in which, besides the works of Matteo di Gualdo, also a beautiful painting of Niccolò Alunno can be admired.

The museum also consists of Bexellska stugan (Bexell Cottage), Båtmuseet i Galtabäcks hamn (Galtabäck boat museum) and Fågelboet i Vessigebro (home of the author August Bondeson).

Haparanda, Norrbotten County, Sweden

Haparanda has been the easternmost outpost of Sweden since 1809 when Finland was lost to Russia. Haparanda has always been an important trading post, this continues until this day with the world's northernmost IKEA store, bringing customers from all across the Barents region. It is a great gateway to the wild north of Scandinavia. Most people here speak all of Swedish, Finnish and English.

The two towns Haparanda and Tornio are a showcase of cooperation across the border. Not only is the border more or less invisible, with people living, shopping and working on either side, regardless of the other two, or nationality, but there are also e.g. shared police patrols, with one in a pair taking command and responsibility depending on what side of the border they happen to be at.

Måløy, Vågsøy, Norway

Sheltered on the east side of the island of Vågsøy, Måløy is a major exporter of Norway's treasured seafood

A charming village, with a population of just over 3,000 people, Måløy is the administrative centre of the municipality of Vågsøy. While the town is small, it has huge facilities for preserving and processing fish. Every year, 180,000-200,000 tonnes of fish are brought ashore here and then exported directly abroad.  You can see the schedule for the ships entering and leaving the port here

Vågsøy has several unique characteristics. In addition to Måløy town centre and its many lighthouses, the area is known for the well-known Kannestenen rock, molded by the sea over thousands of years into a spectacular mushroom-like shape. Also, for lazy summer days, you'll find a beautiful silver sand beach.  Some say it's the most beautiful in Norway. Adding to its local attractions, Måløy is close to several famous national attractions like the Jostedalsbreen National Park - where you will find the largest glacier in continental Europe.

History
Legend has it that Viking King Magnus the Good went ashore on the small island of Moldøen in 1035. From here he summoned all the peasants in the area to "thing" (meaning assembly of free men). His father St. Olav had been fighting these peasants for a long time, but Magnus wanted peace and promised them better laws and more freedom. The island was then named Málstefna, literally "speaking stone".

This was later modernized to Moldøen. Måløy was originally founded as a trading centre on this small island. As trade flourished, the town gradually moved to the larger island of Vågsøy, while keeping the name of the smaller island. This is the cause of some confusion, although the smaller island is today often known as "Lisje-Måløyna" (the smaller Måløy). Måløy became an official town in 1997.
